Historical context: two gallons, two pints
Before 1824, Britain used several different gallon definitions depending on what was being measured — an ale gallon, a wine gallon, and a corn (dry goods) gallon all differed in size, which caused constant confusion in trade. The Weights and Measures Act 1824 swept this away and created a single imperial gallon, defined as the volume occupied by 10 pounds of distilled water — from which the imperial pint (one-eighth of a gallon) gets its still-used value of 568.26ml.
