What is the Insulation U-Value Calculator?
A U-value calculator estimates how well a wall or roof build-up insulates against heat loss, expressed in W/m²K (lower means better insulated). It works by converting insulation thickness and thermal conductivity into thermal resistance (R = thickness ÷ conductivity), adding that to the existing structure's resistance and a standard allowance for internal/external surface resistance, then taking the reciprocal of the total resistance (U = 1 ÷ R) to get the U-value. To calculate it manually: divide insulation thickness in metres by its conductivity in W/mK to get its R-value, add your structure's R-value and roughly 0.17 for surface resistance, then invert the total — real build-ups have multiple layers, so for Building Regulations compliance use a full calculation from your insulation manufacturer or a qualified assessor.
How it works
A U-value measures how much heat passes through a building element (wall, roof, floor) — the lower the U-value, the better insulated it is. It's calculated as the reciprocal of total thermal resistance (R-value): each layer in a build-up (existing structure, insulation, surface films) has its own resistance, and these add together before being inverted to get the final U-value.
