What is the Childcare Cost Estimator?
A childcare cost estimator works out the likely daily, weekly, monthly and annual cost of nursery or childminder care, based on the hourly rate you're quoted and how many hours and days per week you need. It works by multiplying the hourly rate by hours per day for a daily cost, multiplying that by days per week for a weekly figure, then scaling up to monthly (weekly × 52 ÷ 12) and annual (weekly × 52) totals. To calculate it manually: daily cost = rate × hours, weekly cost = daily × days per week, monthly cost = weekly × 52 ÷ 12 — since actual childcare costs vary hugely by region and provider, this uses the figures you enter rather than a fabricated national average, and doesn't account for government schemes like free hours, Tax-Free Childcare or the Universal Credit childcare element, which are worth checking on gov.uk.
